The Breath

The Breath is guitarist Stuart McCallum and Armagh-born singer/flautist Ríoghnach Connolly. Based in Manchester, they met on the city’s gig circuit several years ago. An unlikely pairing though it was – she a folk singer, loud and brash and member of Afro Celt Sound System, he an acclaimed jazz guitarist and member of Cinematic Orchestra. Their connection was immediate; they formed The Breath, a duo to present their own, personal songs and their unique take on alt-folk.

For The Breath, it’s all about the song. Connolly writes the only way she knows how; a spontaneous stream of consciousness giving rise to naked, heartfelt songs as likely to touch on childhood summers and first love as post-colonial injustices and grief. But it’s her impassioned storytelling and stop-you-in-your-tracks voice, coupled with Stuart’s understated brilliance that lies at the heart of their compelling live shows.

For this special Artist Lockdown performance, The Breath will perform a selection of songs from their acclaimed catalogue and unveil brand new music.

Thank you thank you thank you Ríoghnach and Stuart for sharing your music with us in lockdown!
How privileged to be sitting in our flat watching the world’s best music live from the world’s best music venue.
It must have been strange playing live to an empty Band On The Wall but rest assured, every guitar, vocal and flute note was pitch perfect and emotionally moving. Just hope this gig is available to play back again and again, it would be worth paying the entrance fee every time!
Keep well and thanks to all involved in the production, Ray and Jane, Greater Manchester
